    Big Girls Don't Cry
I just walked the three turkey legs to thier first day of school!
(Its supposed to be 101 degrees today but its a tradition we apparently just couldn't break.)

They looked so sweet in thier little blue and white uniforms!
(Techincally they are the only kids at school still wearing uniforms since the school abandoned them two years ago but we payed for them and they still fit so they will wear them for a while longer I guess. "I hate being poor!" Ron Weasley :))

It appears that this year we got all the best teachers in the school so thier definitly won't be a repeat of last year.
(I still can't see Mrs. Arnold in the hallway without wanting to punch her in the face.)

This morning Thomas told me this year would be special because he isn't a baby kindergartener anymore hes a big boy first grader.
(I told him don't call the kindergarteners babies and then started wishing he was a baby just a little bit longer. *sniff*)

I was really dreading the end of summer. I feel like it went to quickly and we didn't have enough time together.
(I'd sit here and cry my eyes out but they took all the Kleenex to school to fullfill the supply list.)

*Edit: Hubby said he knew today was going to be hard for me so he downloaded all of Book 7 onto an ipod to get me through the day. A: He hates all things Harry Potter except the accent on Jim Dale B: I didn't even know he bought an ipod let alone down loaded all that (it takes up 17 cds) and C: I don't know if death and destruction is really what I needed to cheer me up but it was sweet of him to try, right?

If it doesn't rhyme then someone better die.
I took the kids to Border's today to meet Gail Carson Levine, author of Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg. For a minute not long ago Sydney Li was obssessed with the enitre Tinker Bell series, of which only the first book is any good and that was the one by Mrs. Levine.

She answered questions abou writing and inspriration and where her ideas come from and though she seemes totally unprepared for such a young fan base she was really quite funny and I enjoyed listening to her. Turns out she wrote tons of books all in the fairy tale genre, like Ella Enchanted and Fairest. She described how she came up with such ideas and said she liked to "look for the flaws and exploit them hideously". LOL

She said she went back to the original Snow White and read how the mother had pricked her finger while sewing by the window and the drop of blood had fallen on the snow. The mother thought "what if my daughters skin should be as white as this snow and her lips as red as my blood. What if her hair could be as black as my ebony spinning wheel?" MRs.L said she sat back and thought "well that would make a pretty ugly combination wouldn't it. I must have been reading this wrong all these years, because her mother wished her scary!" Then she was talking about how she never like Cinderella at all because she was just too nice and who could trust someone like that? Who sleep on the floor and does all the chores with a smile on thier face? Obviously someone who has been cursed to be obedient!

My favorite bit though was when shes was decsribing these free writing workshops she does at the local library in her home town and how she hears over and over again how the authors got bored with a story and quit without finishing it. "Well if it bores the author it would probably bore the reader to so its lucky you quit!" She said "do you know what my job as an author is? To torture the character! Do you know why I do this?" The whole small audience threw out school taught reasons for anything from plot development to character depth and she says "yeah those are good but no. The real reason is to torture you! The reader! If I didn't throw something terrible at the character and make him suffer unneccessarily you would get bored. So I continue to torture them at your insistence. Which is why my new book coming out soon is about human sacrifice. But in a nice light tone..."

Sydney Li got her book signed and we left but it really made me think about some of my favorite books and even my favorite fanfic writers (especially a certain someone who has been torturing red heads since September 2005) and I figure she must be on to somehting because all my favorite storys end up with the hero beaten to a bloody pulp! What fun!

    Such a sheep
Ok I came over here just to watch over the fanfic writers and artists I adore so much who are most likely going to make this thier one and only journal. So can I just go through and friend everyone who has arrived so far or do I need to play the "will you be my friend" game again for politeness sake? I mean I don't write I just read so you probably see my name in comments and no about me if not know me so... If I friended you once I can friend you again consequence free, right? Pretty please?
